Week Eleven of Summer

Drawings 11 The eleventh week of summer was an odd one, full of intentions that didn’t go quite to plan. My parent’s were gone on vacation and I was left in charge of their plants. Now I am not the most faithful at watering plants so I was a wee bit concerned. Luckily it all worked out and I managed to keep them and their cat alive – hooray!

Drive-InOutside of family ‘duties’ I had made several plans, some of which that didn’t quite work out. On Thursday I had planned to go to a Drive-In movie (Guardians of the Galaxy) with my friends. Mother Nature had other plans. The week started with rain and kept up on Thursday. So rather than sit in our car and watch it through windshield wipers we, being a flexible bunch, altered our plans. Instead we went to an Irish pub for dinner and went to the theater to watch it. (Clearly NOT seeing the movie was no longer an option. We were all rather excited to see it). It was awesome. I recommend it.

HikeI had the day off on Friday so I continued leisurely working on the basement. I FINALLY completed muddying and sanding the last of the drywall. (Hint – this is very very exciting.) I also got said room primed. What what! Work continued on Saturday when I painted the stairwell. After so much productivity I decided to pack up and go for a hike. It did not go quite to plan either. I made it about 1/2-3/4 of a mile in before the mosquitoes got too bad and I had to turn around. They’re wicked little blood suckers. I think I’ll postpone that hike until the fall when the they’ve gone for the season.

ConcertSunday rolls around, the day that I had planned to go to an outdoor concert. I was kind of excited to see Ingrid Michaelson but earlier in the week I discovered the concert was cancelled. Presumably because of the rain (I’m guessing that don’t blend well with an outdoor venue). So the plans for the day rather cleared up. I was feeling rather productive when I woke up so I went ahead and got the bedroom painted. So all in all, despite the week not going to plan it was still quite lovely.

Until next time

Week Ten of Summer

Attend Street Market I know this is late, but c’est la vie. Summer is (or was) two-thirds done! The excitement of my tenth week of summer was Saturday. I decided to get up nice and early and head to the Des Moines farmer’s market. It was fun to walk around and see what is being produced locally. I managed to snag a few things for supper later that night.

Week 10 drawingsAfter touring around the market I returned home and was already muddying my bedroom when my mom called at 9:30 to see where I was. To say she was surprised would be an understatement. Who sleeps in on weekends?

Farmer's Market FoodLater that afternoon I took my loot from the market and concocted a lovely treat for supper. There were so many options there it was hard not to get too much food, but I ended up with some nice fresh green onions, new potatoes, some Gouda cheese (with bacon) and some focaccia with green peppers and garlic. With such beginnings I went with cheesy hash browns with a side of bread. I don’t usually make hash browns so I’d call it a success. Really it was just nice to get out and enjoy the day in a way I don’t always get to, which, of course, is the point.

Week Nine of Summer

Week 9 DrawingsA very slow week, last week, for yours truly. Well I say that. There was stuff happening. The week just ended rather quickly. Between all the random things going on (house work, summer shenanigans with friends, family time, etc) I did manage to get something checked off my list! CarouselMy coworkers and I volunteered to run the town carousel for a few hours on Sunday. While running it, my parents brought my nephew around and we all took a ride. That’s it though. So besides celebrating my mom’s birthday, attending a farewell potluck for an acquaintance and getting to have a drink with one of my besties who was in from out of town, that was my seek.

Week Eight of Summer

CampingLast weekend ended up being quite the weekend! My family and I went to my sister’s place in Minnesota for a camping weekend. We haven’t been camping in a couple of years because the last time we went was an unmitigated disaster. Well, in some respects it was, in others it was quite fun. Part of the reason it was so terrible was that it randomly rained. However, the rain was nice enough to only rain at night. My sister and brother-in-law might disagree though. Their air mattress turned traitor in the middle of the night and deflated. The tent joined the party and leaked so that caused the two of them to wake up in water the next day. So that was a whole thing. Then we were up on the bluffs playing a board game when it rained bugs. You might think that’s hyperbole. Let me be clear. It’s not. We were under a tree and out of no where these little black gross bugs started falling. I still don’t really understand what the deal with that was, but once we heard it was suppose to rain during the second night as well we bumped up our departure from 10 am the next morning to 8 pm that evening. We were all happier for that choice.

FireworksNow you know some of the baggage we all had going into this weekend. This weekend we decided to test the waters of camping by just sleeping in tents in my sister’s back yard. It was the first time sleeping in a tent (and outside I believe) for my nephew (who is three). I am pleased to announce that from that stand point (and many others) it was a resounding success! Little squirt loves camping and all that comes with it. We slept in sleeping bags and tents. Had a fire, roasted marshmallows for smores. (He helped me and when we lit some on fire that no one would eat, he sided with me statingFire that he liked burnt marshmallows. He then proceeded, like I did, to eat the burnt ‘mallow sans smore. Best. Ally. Ever.) My sister also surprised us by having a fireworks pack at her house. I forget it’s legal to have them in Minnesota. They let me light most of them, but honestly that was to add to the show. Shenanigans all around, but I didn’t burn myself, anyone else, or the tent. Although that last one was a concern at first.

PicnicThe next day we lazed about before packing up chips and drinks and heading to a deli. After securing sandwiches we went to a park along one of Minnesota’s many lakes for a picnic. It was a delightful afternoon. After our picnic we took a quick trolly ride. Although it only lasted a few minutes we learned a lot about the history of the trolly system in the cities. Quite fun. After that we went to a play structure and while nephew climbed to his heart’s content my sister’s and I played speed dominoes. (Dominoes is a thing in my family, however I had never played with sixes and less. With that set-up the game flies.) After that we decided to rent a paddle-boat and go out on the lake. LakeI remember doing paddle-boats at summer camp and I don’t remember it being quite so difficult. Maybe it was because we were a man down. We rented a four-person boat and manned it with myself, my two sisters and my nephew. He couldn’t quite reach the pedals yet, so he got to ride completely. It might have gone better if I was more effective. I was laughing so hard it made peddling difficult. My bad.

Week 8That, in a nutshell, was my weekend. Lots of laughing, family bonding, and games. Then we got back and my mother and I attached the basement with avengence. My parents are headed out west in a couple weeks, and I challenged her (and myself) to get all the little tweaks done before she left. We had some random patching that we needed to get done before I could finish up muddying, spackling and priming. So while my parents go out west for a wedding I’ll stay home and hopefully get the walls all done. Pipe dream perhaps, but I’ll keep dreaming it. It just might work out.

Until next time

Week Six of Summer

Week 6 sketchesWell the Holiday weekend has come and gone and I for one am always thankful for the return to a normal work schedule. Don’t get me wrong, I love three-day weekends, but last week’s schedule was particularly altered due to weather. Monday there was a freak rain storm that knocked the power out. We were let out early in between showers, which was an oddly fun way to start the work week. Then Tuesday we were without power for a couple hours in the morning. Then regular days Wednesday and Thursday. Cue end of work week and a randomly fun Fourth of July.

Friday was a day fueled by whims. Randomly I drug out my rollarblades. Shockingly I knew exactly where they were, despite not using them for the last five years. Although, in all honestly, I did store them in the garage just last year when I was moving in, so it isn’t all that impressive. The rollarblading went shockingly well. I didn’t fall once. For me that is quite the accomplishment. I don’t have stellar balance and I can’t break. RollarbladingA match made in heaven, right? There were several close calls but I stayed on all eight wheels. To help facilitate this I made a bee-line to the elementary school parking lot and J4 roller rinked it. Just went round and round listening to my music until I was ready to slowly and carefully make my way home. Rollerblading across train tracks is not the easiest thing. All-in-all the first go went so well I went again this weekend, only the second time I sent to the high school parking lot (well high school when I went there, now it’s the “intermediate” building – or something like that). It’s a bit bigger and close to the middle school and new high school so I can just go from lot to lot. A much smarter idea for me to stay off the streets.

I also started a quilt this weekend. Because why not? I’ve had some of my shirts from high school cut up and ready for ages and this weekend I got them all sewn together. I still have several steps left (Trim, back side and edging) but somehow it feels like I have a lion’s share of the work done. At first when I put ‘Make a Quilt’ on my list I figured it would be one of the things I didn’t accomplish. A bit more optimistic about it now.

Besides the fun things I did my mother and I also got more work done on the basement remodel (which was fun too). We built a couple of columns, walled the closet, put in some trim and some other random patching projects. Not to shabby if I do say so myself. Every step we take brings us a bit closer to completion. The nice bit about what we got done was these were areas we were putting off until we had time to really think of solutions. It was as if our brains had been mulling over the problems while we did the other work because when we sat down to talk it through it all just fell into place. Thank you brain.

Oh! I’m also kind of proud. My new writing venture (qfreewriting.wordpress.com) is going well. Is it brilliant writing? Of course not. It’s all quick, rough draft quality work. However, it’s fun to do, so I’ll be keeping that up as best I can. Links to the first week of writing are below. I think what I like most about the prompts is that sometimes they take a turn that even I didn’t even know was coming.

Until next time

Week Five of Summer

June is over! I can hardly believe it. Summer is a third of the way gone and boy is it flying fast. I’ve completed 23.5% of my summer to-do list (although, if you take into consideration I realistically only thought I’d get half my list completed, I’m 47% done).

Urban Exploration

This week started with an impromptu romp around Gilbert. Gilbert is a tiny town in the middle of Iowa. I went to primary school there and have since become a resident. After my mother and I did some basement work on Monday I decided to walk around the town. It was half-past nine so nothing too terribly interesting was happening while I ‘explored’. I did have fun doing a lap around the track. Yup, I actually put ‘fun’, ‘track’ and ‘lap’ in the same sentence. Granted, I did the lap barefoot. Sure running barefoot may not be brilliant, but running in Toms would not have been a good idea either. Also, it’s just so squishy. Any who, my favorite part of the walk was when I was a block away from my house and I realized this random pine tree had lit Christmas lights on it. I don’t know who did it, because it is right by the co-op, but I like them.

Christmas in JunePerhaps the decorator was just getting ready for ‘Christmas in June’ a couple days early? I argue this only because I drove past a couple days ago and the tree wasn’t lit. I didn’t necessarily see any lights on it either, but it was dark. We celebrated at my office by listening to Christmas music all day. Although we all agree that it’s too bad we can’t listen to Christmas music more often, after the eight hour binge, we decided we are all set for awhile.

Sand VolleyballBetween scheduling and rain outs I hadn’t made it to any of our sand volleyball games. That all changed last Thursday. The lemons, again united, had a blast losing all three games. That isn’t sass. We did have fun. It’s hard not to have fun at sand volleyball. It is innately so much more chill than regular volleyball. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season! We had one more player that wasn’t there but this Thursday, I think, we’ll all be truly united again. Unless I’m forgetting something, which is likely.

Foreign MusicA fun part about being office DJ is that my coworkers get to enjoy my musical whims as well. For instance, this summer we have replaced ‘Free Choice Friday’ (where I would ask a coworker what they want to listen to and inevitably they say “oh I don’t care”) with Foreign Friday. Yup. We’ve gone international. Last week we listened to the spotify mix Entro to Hungarian Pop which introduced us to a whole slew of new artists. Certainly more than the three we had started the summer with. Our mix of Sigur Ros (Icelandic Rock), Julieta Venegas (American-born Mexican singer) and Toe (Japanese group) has grown considerably. You can never have too much music, right?

Weekly SketchesThe thing about summer is, no matter how much you have during the week, weekends are also packed. This weekend was no exception. Enjoyably we went up to my sister’s in Minnesota to celebrate my nephew’s third (three and a half actually) birthday. Although getting there was tricky with roads closed for flooding, once we got there it was perfect. Breezy so the humidity wasn’t terrible, and the rain stayed away until after the party. It came down by the boat load as we drove home, but at least we weren’t washed away while eating cake. Then, before I knew it, Sunday passed in a wink. With the storms in Central Iowa taking most of yesterday’s attention, we are already to Tuesday (and subsequently July). With July brings a new endevor. Now that I’ve been able to keep up my daily sketching, we’ll see if I can add writing to the mix. However, since I don’t have many interesting things to say, it will come in the form of responding to creative writing prompts. I decided to create a separate blog for that (qfreewriting.wordpress.com). That’s it really. Let the summer march on!

Until next time

Letters to myself: Part 1 – 10 years ago

I am a terrible blogger. I neglect to look at other blogs (except those that are part of the League really), even the ones I subscribe to. That would be why I have yet to participate in any of the writing prompts put out by The Daily Post. However the other day I was actually looking at my reader and saw this prompt “Write a letter to your 14 year old self. Tomorrow write one to yourself in 20 years.” I’ve decided to tweak it just a bit. So a letter to myself 10 years ago and a letter/bucket list for myself in 20 years tomorrow (or sometime this week). Here goes nothing.

Dear Juvenile Jamie (sometimes I actually refer to myself as this),

First off congratulations on completing your first high school play! The Stuck Pot was a lot of laughs and if memory serves you had way too much fun sneezing water onto David Cox. How’s cooking going? The nutrition half of the class is now over, so I imagine you’ve upgraded to cooking vegetables by now.

I know geometry is a bit killer, and (spoiler alert) you’ll be grounded for the weekend due to your poor standing rather soon but it’s probably for the best. You’ll miss the snowball fight where Weber accidentally throws ice balls. Jamie will get hit in the eye, which is not good, so yeah, for the best. Also you’ll totally understand geometry…next year. (Kind of like how algebra is clicking for you now, a year late). On the actual good news front dad doesn’t make us take math senior year. I wont spoil anymore of it than I have, but you are going to love our schedule senior year.

Continue to take as many classes with Mrs. Schloerke as you can, they’ll lead you down the right path for a career. I should probably warn you about all the mistakes you will make/are making but we need to make them. I’m a firm believer in mistakes, or rather the learning experiences we go through contribute to who we become. Although we may not be rich and famous now I can tell you we’re happy, which is better. So make mistakes, be a bit of a fool, just don’t forget to try to learn something from absolutely everything.

What does the future hold for you? Well you’ll ‘end up’ not far from home (at least right now), although where you live would be unimaginable to who you are now. Those pesky school rivalries. You’ll rise to great heights (literally) and fall a lot. Seriously, watch out in PE at the end of this year. You’re going to have a beautiful fall that will land you in a cast. (Sorry, we are still clumsy) Don’t believe me? Just you wait.

Lets see, what else? Wow, you’re not driving yet, weird. Don’t worry, we’ll never really have to drive a manual. However the theory andthe action will finally click in your head. Just be patient. Also I know you don’t have a cell phone, but 10 years later you still don’t really use it a whole lot. Especially not compared to hipsters with their smart phones. Weird to think how you have no clue what a hipster is and wow George W. Bush is still in office (it’s election day here for me). As is our way this has turned into a ramble rather quickly. So I shall say farewell for now. Good luck at districts (don’t freak, just breath and you’ll be fine). It’ll be close but you and the team will squeak through, nerves are seriously evil. You’ll overcome them as a group though and be little rock stars (in your own heads at least).

Sincerely,
Your future self
